As a author stymied by previous success, writers block, substance abuse, relationship issues and a critical set of father points, Elliott’s cracked-out chronicle of a weird homicide trial quantities to lower than the sum of its elements. Not lengthy into the 2007 trial of programmer Hans Reiser, accused of murdering his spouse, the defendant’s pal Sean Sturgeon obliquely confessed to a number of murders (although not the homicide of Reiser’s spouse). Elliott, caught up within the film-ready twist and his tenuous connection to Sturgeon (they share a BDSM social circle), makes a gonzo report of the proceedings. The result’s a scattered, self-indulgent romp by way of the thoughts of a depressive narcissist obsessed together with his insecurities and childhood traumas.
